Sustainability

Sustainability at ARC

At ARC, we have a vision to develop sustainable clusters for world-class science and innovation, and to be recognised as a catalyst for sustainable growth. Sustainability is a fundamental pillar of our long-term vision. It is woven into the fabric of our operations, and our interactions with the communities we serve.

To be successful, we recognise that our business must be resilient, adaptable, and responsible in its approach to the world’s most pressing challenges: climate change, resource scarcity, biodiversity decline, social inequality, and ethical governance.

We invite our members, suppliers, business partners and wider stakeholders to join us on this journey to create lasting value and build a better, more sustainable future, proving that business and sustainability can go hand in hand.

OUR HEADLINE COMMITMENTS

LIMIT CARBON IN CONSTRUCTION

We are aiming to transition our built environment towards Net Zero Carbon with a focus on halving the upfront embodied carbon of our new developments by 2033.

REDUCE OUR ENERGY USE INTENSITY

By applying a Fabric First approach to achieve high energy performance and incorporating Low and Zero Carbon technologies such as air source heat pumps and rooftop solar panels, we are on a mission to reduce operational carbon emissions by 75% per square metre by 2033.

BOOST CAMPUS BIODIVERSITY

By managing our estate sustainably to maximise its biodiversity value, we are creating a network of green spaces for people & nature where vibrant and diverse ecosystems thrive. Our Award-winning Woodland Habitat Improvement Project (WHIP) is an example of how we’re turning our commitment to biodiversity into tangible action.

EXPORT ZERO WASTE TO LANDFILL

We are committed to bid farewell to landfills while ensuring over 90% of construction waste finds new life through recycling.

ENABLE SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL

We’re blazing a trail towards the future of mobility. From discounted bus fares and free bike loan options to convenient EV charging stations across our campus, we’re empowering our staff and visitors with the power of active and low emission travel.

ZERO

Waste sent to landfill from our managed buildings

ARC is proud to be working with Planet Mark since 2023 to measure our carbon footprint across all scopes of emissions.

Embarking on a Net Zero Certification Programme demonstrates our dedication to reduce emissions and meet science-based net zero targets.

In 2025, we have joined the UN Race to Zero campaign, committing to reach net zero by 2050 and halve our emissions by 2030.

In addition to this net zero pledge, ARC is committed to ensuring that our public communications and engagement activities will be aligned with our net zero ambitions at a local, sectoral, or national level.
