The Royal Institution Demo
Community Drinks & Pizza
Where has this year gone?
We would love for you to join us for our last community drinks and pizza night of the year. Meet us in the atrium to celebrate the community we have created to year and a say a farewell before the Christmas break.
We have a little treat in store for you all from The Royal Institution
Explore some of the most fundamental experiments and demonstrations performed here in our 200 year history.
Demonstrations include:
- Voltaic Pile
A recreation of the very first battery, which created the foundations for the subsequent discoveries made at the Royal Institution
- Gherkin Lamp
How do you turn electricity into light? By using a gherkin, of course! The idea of an electric circuit is explored in this bright and steamy demonstration.
- Arc Lamp
Humphry Davy, using the world’s most powerful battery at the time, passed electricity through electrodes to create an extremely bright light, that burns hot enough to create plasma
- Faraday motor
Michael Faraday’s first electric motor is demonstrated with modern equipment. A wire rotates around in a bowl, driven by an electromotive force, and forms the basis of all electric motors we use today. The original motor can be seen in Faraday’s Lab on the lower ground floor
- Dewar flask and liquid nitrogen
James Dewar’s invention of an insulated container at the Royal Institution allowed for the liquification of many gases, including liquid nitrogen, which has a plethora of uses in many industries today.
Ensure to RSVP to reserve your spot.
